dog birthday cake recipe

IMG_9268Hi there,

This is my little fur baby, Sugar. A 22 pound little firecracker of a french bulldog. I often say she has too much personality for her little body, but she’s actually just the best {and I’ll admit to  being a crazy dog mom}, but how can you resist that face!

IMG_5383Sugar’s getting spoiled for her 5th birthday with a delicious homemade cake that has personal touches just for her {the popcorn is a must for us since she screams with excitement every time she hears the popping noise coming from the microwave or the crinkling of the store bought bag}. This cake is as healthy as it is cute with a simple list of natural ingredients.

The dog cake was really easy to make and Sugar loved it!

  1. To start, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Then mix the dry ingredients (flour and baking soda) in a large bowl and add the apple sauce, peanut butter, egg, and bananas.
  3. Make sure to mix it all together until smooth.
  4. Grease a baking sheet (I used a 9 inch round cake pan) to avoid sticking.
  5. Put the cake in the 350 degree oven for about 20-25 minutes (test it with a tooth pick to make sure it comes out clean before taking out of the oven).
  6. Let cool before removing from the pan.
  7. Cut or leave whole as desired. I chose to cut it in 4 equal slices and stack them to give the effect of her having a big slice from a full cake.

For the frosting I had planned on using peanut butter and plain greek yogurt, but when Sugar realized what was going on, her sassy self wanted that cake right away so I only ended up using the yogurt to frost in between the layers and the top. Then finish with your dog’s favorite treat on top for some extra love.

Hope your fur babies enjoy it as much as she did! I used almost all organic ingredients, but you can definitely modify for what works best for you.

Cake:

1 cup flour (I used whole wheat)

1/2 tsp of baking soda

1/2 cup of apple sauce

1/4 cup of peanut butter

1 egg

2 ripe bananas (mashed or pureed)

Frosting:

Plain greek yogurt

Toppings:

Plain, air-popped popcorn
